Frequently Asked Questions

How do I install BopBar?

Download the latest version from the BopBar website or the Mac App Store. Open the downloaded DMG file and drag BopBar to your Applications folder. Launch BopBar from Applications — it will appear in your menu bar immediately. On first launch, macOS may ask for permission to control Music.app; this is required for BopBar to work.

BopBar doesn't show anything in the menu bar

First, make sure the Apple Music app is open and playing something. BopBar reflects the state of Music.app — if Music isn't playing, BopBar will show an idle state. If Music is playing and you still don't see BopBar, check that your menu bar isn't full — macOS may hide items when space is tight. Try quitting other menu bar apps or switching BopBar to compact mode in Settings.

The audio spectrum isn't showing

The live audio spectrum requires macOS 14.2 (Sonoma) or later. If you're on an earlier version, BopBar falls back to a standard progress bar. Make sure the playback bar is enabled in Settings > General. On macOS 14.2 and later, BopBar shows the live spectrum in place of the standard progress bar. If it still doesn't work, try restarting both BopBar and the Music app.

How do I switch between compact and expanded mode?

Open BopBar's mini-player by clicking the menu bar item, then click the gear icon to open Settings. Under General, toggle between Compact (icon only) and Expanded (icon + text + controls). The change takes effect immediately.

How do I restore my purchase on a new Mac?

If you purchased through the Mac App Store, sign into the same Apple ID and re-download BopBar — your purchase is tied to your Apple ID. For direct purchases via the website, use the license key emailed to you at purchase. If you've lost your key, contact us at develop@youmeapps.com with your purchase details.

Does BopBar collect any data?

No. BopBar does not collect or store personal data. All settings are stored locally on your Mac. Read our full Privacy Policy for details.

Can I use BopBar on multiple Macs?

Yes. A single license covers all Macs you personally own. If you purchased via the Mac App Store, simply download BopBar on each Mac signed into the same Apple ID. If you purchased directly, use your license key on each Mac.
