Frequently asked questions

What do I need to use BopBar?
You need a Mac running macOS 14 (Sonoma) or later, Apple's Music app installed, and a signed-in Music account. BopBar works with your library, Apple Music streaming, and Apple Music Radio. The live audio spectrum requires macOS 14.2 or later; on earlier supported versions, BopBar shows a standard progress bar instead.
Does BopBar work with Spotify or other music services?
BopBar v1.0 is built exclusively for Apple Music.
How does the audio spectrum work?
BopBar analyzes Music.app's audio output in real time to draw the live spectrum in your menu bar. The audio never leaves your Mac and is never stored. On macOS 14.2 and later, the visualization updates live as your music plays.
Is this a subscription or a one-time purchase?
BopBar is a one-time purchase — $1.99 for lifetime access. No subscriptions, no recurring charges. Your license covers all Macs you personally own.
Does BopBar need any permissions?
On first launch, macOS may ask for permission to control Music.app. This is required so BopBar can read playback info and send playback commands. BopBar does not record or transmit your music.
Does BopBar appear in the Dock?
No. BopBar runs as a pure menu bar accessory — it has no Dock icon and doesn't appear in your Command-Tab app switcher. It's there when you need it in the menu bar, and invisible otherwise. You can access settings by clicking the gear icon in the mini-player.
How do I get updates?
BopBar updates are delivered through the Mac App Store. When a new version is available, you'll get it through the standard App Store update process — no separate update mechanism needed.
