Privacy Policy
Last Updated: May 6, 2026
Introduction
BopBar ("we," "our," or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains our practices regarding data collection, use, and disclosure when you use our macOS menu bar application.
Data Collection
BopBar does not collect or sell personal data, and it does not track your usage. The app stores settings locally on your Mac. BopBar does not use our own analytics, advertising, or update servers. Some features may communicate with Apple services, such as Apple Music or the Mac App Store, as needed for app functionality and distribution.
Local Data Storage
All settings and preferences (display mode, accent color, onboarding status) are stored locally on your device using Apple's UserDefaults system. This data never leaves your Mac.
Music Playback Data
BopBar reads playback information from Apple's Music app (Music.app) using AppleScript to display the current track, artist, album, and playback state. This information is:
- Read in real time and displayed in the menu bar and mini-player
- Never sent to our servers or used for tracking
- Sent to Apple only when needed to look up missing album artwork that Music.app does not expose directly
- Never shared with any non-Apple third party
Audio Processing
BopBar's live audio spectrum feature captures audio data from the Music app process. This audio data is:
- Processed entirely on-device in real time for visualization purposes
- Never recorded, stored, or transmitted
- Discarded immediately after spectrum analysis
Data Security
All settings are stored locally on your device. BopBar does not transmit data to our servers or non-Apple third parties. The application may contact Apple services for Mac App Store distribution, Apple Music functionality, and album artwork lookup. The application is sandboxed, ensuring data access is restricted to the app only.
Third-Party Services
BopBar does not integrate with any third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking services. Distribution and updates are handled through the Mac App Store. Album artwork fallback uses Apple's public iTunes Search service when Music.app does not provide artwork data.
Children's Privacy
BopBar is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13.
Your Rights
Since BopBar does not collect any personal data, there is no data to access, delete, or export. All settings are stored locally and can be reset by deleting the app's preferences file or uninstalling the application.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page and updating the "Last Updated" date. Significant changes may be communicated through the app's update mechanism.
